Nas Loses - Changes Album Title
After all the back and forth and tough talk from Nas that his album’s title won’t change, it has.
A representative for Def Jam has confirmed to EW.com that hip-hop artist Nas has made an eleventh-hour decision to change the title of his new album from N—– to simply Nas. The Queens rapper sparked a heated debate last fall when he announced the provocative title for his upcoming ninth record, but last October, Island Def Jam Music Group chair Antonio “L.A.” Reid publicly denied widespread reports that label execs were uncomfortable with his decision. “We stand firmly behind and beside our artists with pride and with pleasure,” Reid told MTV News at the time. “Anything Nas wants to do, I completely stand beside him.”
But in an interview with MTV News last week, Nas suggested that he was facing renewed pressure: “Everybody is trying to stop the title…. Record stores are gonna have a problem in this day and time selling a record with that title. Who knows what’s gonna turn out and be on that title? Who knows what that title will be?” The politically-charged Nas is due in stores July 1. For more of Nas’ thoughts on his new music, check EW’s summer music preview coverage in print on Friday.

I feel that the recording label gave NAS a super ultimatum. Either change it, or were not releasing the album. I see why everyone does not want the name to release but as well, I feel that NAS is trying to make a certain point, and for changing it, it seems as NAS is nothing more than any other rapper out there. Damn, as a white guy that has loved rap for 20 years, I am really unhappy that I won’t be able to ask for this album by it’s real name. NOT because I would take pleasure in the utterance, but because I wanted to take part in the reverse discourse. Whether the album is good or not, the title was doing good work, opening eyes, starting conversations. But, once again forward progress is slowed by those worried about money. Are we surprised? Nope. Sad? I, for one, am.

Never had any intention of releasing that title, knowing GD well that when he pulled the name that it would cause controversy….enough so it kept his name coming out everyone’s mouth. To me, dude was hot for two albums. After that though, dude’s been trying to “find” himself, only in terms of marketing strategies. I could spell it out for you, but my fingers would hurt from all the typing involved. From a BK standpoint, Kanye is hot. I’m 29 and have seen the rap game evolve in a negative direction. And evolve is the wrong term to use…regress would be more fitting. To hip hops defense though, my taste has probably changed as I’ve mature though.
