Open Forum: Is Hip-Hop Hurting Obama?

Many worry that the support from the Hip-hop community for Barack Obama will be detrimental to his campaign. The conservatives and the elders alike are not taking kindly to his “hip-hop following” and support. As with everything here on Celebully, we all have our different opinions. Personally, I think that it in no way should it affect him and these so called “conservatives” should look at this as a blessing in disguise. This is the first election I can remember that has really got the urban youth, hip-hop artist, and hip-hop heads involved and interested in our countries politics.

Come on Celebulliers, tell us what YOU think….

  3. 7uCky | 08.27.2008 @ 7:31 pm

I refuse to vote in a race driven election. Blacks and whites are both ignorant as shit in this whole election.

  4. 7uCky | 08.27.2008 @ 7:32 pm

And Hip-Hop is making Obama look bad, it’s badd enough he’s being patronized by Fox now blacks are killin him with ignorance. We need a mexican in the white house.

  5. 7uCky | 08.27.2008 @ 7:33 pm

I recall that last, last statement.

  9. devante | 08.27.2008 @ 8:35 pm

its true all these artist screaming obama because he`s black

  10. Pacman | 08.27.2008 @ 8:45 pm

Lets say Obama and McCain were both white, the “hip hop” community would still vote for Obama. Obamas race is not an incentive to voters; however McCain is a republican(the majority of blacks are democrats) and he is simply running a sloppy campaign. Race is not the issue. If anything the election is not driven by race but the media is. More black people are being asked for and opinion they would carry regardless, because a black man is running. A republican will not win this election. Case closed. The democrats know this and have taken the opportunity so break a barrier sooner that later.
Back to the original question “is hip hop hurting Obama?” no i do not believe so those who say it is are simply saying “citizens should not express their views because its not what the Majority likes to see.” It is our job to change and develop society! If every one conformed throughout
    history, time would stand still.

  11. The Enforcer | 08.27.2008 @ 8:46 pm

    People want change

  12. patdelapp | 08.27.2008 @ 9:08 pm

hip hop and many black people are supporting obama strictly because hes black and have no idea about his policies, they simply see obamas skin color and go ape shit. its helping and hurting his campaign.

  13. dirtysouthsoulja | 08.27.2008 @ 9:18 pm

aight look man, i liked ron paul but he lost and right now after reading about obama i like him not because he is balck or anything because the man is very hard working . just go google the dude he alwayz do the right stuff for people. and the this nigga mcain is so fucking stupid he has done nothing for US. only think he has ever done is that he is vitnam vetaren. the fuck i care what he did back then i want whats good for now and this economy of NOW. so i will vote obama becaus he know what he talking about, not because he is black i dont look at people by color of the skin. and iam not even an american iam a martian hahah peace and love….

  14. PMG | 08.27.2008 @ 9:23 pm

Barack isnt gonna change shit THE PRESIDENT DOESNT FUCKING MATTER its like being the king of england there’s no real power and no hip hop isn’t hurting obama because Id say most people over the age of 30 dont give a fuck about hip hop

  15. hol' up | 08.27.2008 @ 9:51 pm

yal cant say that people r votin fo him cause he black cuz that aint true….if u for that jhon ni66a we basically gonna have to go through a whole nother 4 years of bush cuz they got the same concepts…oboma will better america in plenty of ways…y u think white people voitin 4 him 2…..i think hip-hop is hurtin him a lil bit cuz they gon try 2 use it aganist him in the long run but he still gonna win

  16. Kickz | 08.27.2008 @ 10:19 pm

well in my book cant no one do no fuckin worst than Bush black white chinese mexican whateva, so if anyone vote 4 mccain they a dumb ass imma keep it 100, hip hop is helpin 2 in a sense cus it showin niggas that they need to get the fuck up of they asses and do somethin wit they lives make a difference and shit, i believe it time 4 a change hopefully obama can help take that role cus mccain aint gone do shit but continue bush’s work… so at the point in time race isnt a major issue as it was in the primaries cus its a white dude whose republican and a black dude whose democrat, if u ask me, black or white ppl gonna vote democrat…

  17. KG333 | 08.27.2008 @ 10:44 pm

I’d say the most blacks are voting for obama because he is black. I honestly dont agree that Obama can do all that he says he is going to because thats not going to happen. Its not a one man decision its a government decision. you cant just pull out of iraq when we have caused conflict there. if we leave now they will all just be killed by al queda. and democrats want universal health care….. have fun with your fuckin taxes. Mccain on the other hand is a white man who is also old… older white people with money tend to only care about older white people with money. sort of like bush. Mccain’s experience dominates Obama’s. If you watch the capaign adds they are both saying the same shit. stop global warming blah blah blah. By voting for obama you are hoping that his claims of change will actually be true. doubt it. and if you vote Mccain you trust his experience in the government. But Mccain is also on the verge of death so who knows how long hell be in the white house. Honestly i think Hillary would have been a better dem candidate due to her experience and the input of her husband who was a great president. Obama is a celebrity. but in the end all politicians are actors and frauds.

  18. The Watcher17 | 08.27.2008 @ 11:03 pm

I don’t think I will vote honestly. If I’m correct popular votes don’t even matter as much at the Electoral College. That being said, everyone could vote for Barack Obama and he still wouldn’t become president if I’m correct in my thinking. If I’m not please shed some light on this subject. But if what I’m saying is true, screw it I won’t vote cause it truly doesn’t matter.

  19. izzo | 08.27.2008 @ 11:57 pm

Niggas need to shut the fuck up and just let obama do him…..he aint need hip hop to get here he dont need it now point blank

  20. KG333 | 08.28.2008 @ 12:28 am

Well the electoral college depends on the popular votes. I live in the hartford district of CT. if most of the people in this district vote for barack obama the hartford district represenitive votes for obama and if 3 out of 5 of the reps in CT vote for obama then obama will get 7 electoral votes from CT. i believe im correct. maybe

  21. KG333 | 08.28.2008 @ 12:29 am

the 2 more votes would be from the senate

  22. whasgood | 08.28.2008 @ 1:18 am

Of course hip hop is hurting O’bama, but it won’t lose him the election, his policies, decisions and political experience well take the fore-front as the election winds down…but for right now hip hop is definetly not helping him..ex. Luda, Jeezy….etc. It seems all hip hop is concerned with is a “black” president…never mentioning anything of importance except the play of the race card (kinda sad)..either hip hop artists don’t fully understand his policies enough to artfully spreak and preach them in an educated manner or they don’t care…either way everytime an artist says “paint the house black” or “my black President”, it hurts, and at a more core point disrespects O’bama, because truly he is so much more than just a “black” nomination……

  23. whatwhat | 08.28.2008 @ 1:26 am

EVERY ISSUE ABOUT OBAMA IS ABOUT HIM BEING BLACK. WHO EVER QUESTIONED THE RACE OF ANY OTHER PRESIDENT AND HIS LEADERSHIP SKILLS? WHITE MEN ACROSS THE WORLD KEEP US IN CONFLICT WITH EACH OTHER AND WE ACCEPT IT WITHOUT ANY IDEA OF THE CAUSE OF OUR PROBLEMS. FUCK IF OBAMA IS BLACK WE AS AMERICANS NEED CHANGE AND THAT BROTHER BRING HOPE TO US ALL AS A NATION. SIMPLY BECAUSE NO OTHER RACE HAS EVER HAD A CHANCE IN THIS COUNTRY TO BECOME A UNITED STATES PRESIDENT AND THAT GIVE ME HOPE THAT ME OR ANY OTHER CAN REALLY MAKE IT IN THIS RACIST AS COUNTRY.

  24. Bri5to | 08.28.2008 @ 1:43 am

its tru ppl R lookin for a change…n alotta ppl wanna see history made from this…n alot of it is race driven…but fuck it everbody has different views on this election n if bush got in office n fucked everythin up i dont think it can get too much worse regardless of race…so if ppl wanna black president, female president, or a alien president right now ill say anythins better than wut we got…but i disagree with hip hop hurtin obama it is tru that alotta of the younger generation is interested in the election because of the hip hop promotion..

  25. Bri5to | 08.28.2008 @ 1:43 am

^^^but it has its disadvantages too

  26. uno-who | 08.28.2008 @ 2:56 am

all presidents are the same..jus cos hes black doesnt mean he gonna make a change n he aint even full black..its all one government..they all on the same team..dont b fooled

  27. Politcally Speaking.. | 08.28.2008 @ 4:36 am

I don’t think they should, down him or whatever, just because he got Rappers for supporters. I mean, just because Country Music singers don’t make songs about him, don’t mean they not supporting him. White people are supporting him just because he’s black also.. Come on now, it’s time for a black President. Expectations are madd high for Barack, everyone wants to see what he can do in office, America is ready for Barack Obama to lead America in the right direction. Vote for him, if we fuck up like we did on Bush.. Oh fucking well. I can’t vote though, I’m only 15, and African American if you were wondering, but I support Obama.

  28. Yola | 08.28.2008 @ 6:06 am

white people had their chance in the whitehouse, now its time for a black person i dont care how ignorant that sounds ENOUGH OF WHITEY !!!

  30. beastmo | 08.28.2008 @ 6:56 am

I believe and i’v always believed that the government knows who is goin be in office way before they get there. I’ll vote for obama for the history behind it but do I expect him to win? Well what I expect really doesn’t matter does it?if he doesn’t win it will be considered fixed and mcaun pulled a fast one. If he does win they’ll do the ame think they did to every young president… Assinate them. JFK was assinated aswell as bill Clinton who’s character was assinated. Sucks for obama but either way well be fucked as Americans

  31. Lonnie | 08.28.2008 @ 7:48 am

whats wrong with voting for someone because he is black?
i know its not what you should look at 1st but i can assure you that people are voting for mcain because he is white

it would be diffent if he were black and had no good politics, but the fact is that he has good ideas and white people are voting for him. the black vote matters but he wouldnt do shit if white people didnt vote for him too … and they have to get over him being black … we just prefer it …

but back to the question, no, hip hop is helping obama … yea there might be some people who dont vote for him because of what a rapper says … but those people were looking for an excuse to not vote for him anyway … so fuck em

  32. the man | 08.28.2008 @ 8:42 am

    Obama 08′ bitches

  33. Daverse | 08.28.2008 @ 9:20 am

    i called this a couple months back….
i think its isn’t doing him any favors in what is sure to be an airtight race this fall
plain and simple…the majority of white and black democratic voters(plus republicans who have considered straying) will get in that booth all alone and think to thereselves….this guy is pals with jay-z…..jay-z talks about murder and drug dealing….then one thought leads to another…

and luda?? dont even get me started about that nut

funny thing is we talk like having the urban youth will be or has ever been a great thing for a campaign…most of ya’ll are gonna sit here and big the man up all year and then when its time to vote…you’ll probably be too high to even get up and register.

now look at this mufucka mccain….he went and got Daddy muthafuckin Yankee now all the hispanics(who actually do vote) are gonna back that devil

its the truth so…i hope this pisses some of ya’ll off…anything to get niggas to vote

  34. Chris | 08.28.2008 @ 9:36 am

Saying presidents dont’ matter is a very flawed opinion. Look at the state of the country in the end of the Clinton presidency, and then the end of the Bush presidency.

  35. WuzzPoppinFam | 08.28.2008 @ 9:44 am

obama is clearly a black man in a white persons body CLEARLY and by these stupid ass rappers voting for him do they think racism will stop NO do they think they think any laws will change beause a black man is in office i hope not bcuz thats not the case

  36. 3astside718 | 08.28.2008 @ 10:17 am

presidents dont matter it juss matters when they do a god awful job like bush

  37. Da Spectre | 08.28.2008 @ 10:28 am

Honestly, the hip hop factor goes both ways. Its making more people aware but the republicans are gonna say he tryin to be acelebrity more than a politician. Im voting for him not on race because race doesn’t matter when in office. look at the prez who wuz catholic (look it up) he didn’t factor his religion in his ideas so y would obama factor his race in. He got pretty much the same ideas as Bill Clinton did but bill is white and obama is black.Im going to vote for him because of the fact that republicans fuck things up everytime they are in office and democrats have to do the clean up. Big bush came and fucked things up, Clinton came and fixed it. Lil bush fucked things up, Obama bout to come in and fix it. they really dont get as much credit as they deserve. The process repeats throghout history, but hopefully Obama can change that.

  38. DA TruF | 08.28.2008 @ 10:44 am

Barack is not full black so people should stop reffering to him as the black manrunning for president. His mother is white, and I believe Hip-Hop will hurt him in his campaigning the older crowd, though it shouldnt, however it will help his status with the young america. They key to this election should be the classifications of america that run in the middle age years primarly from 30-50; I hope and pray another republican does not take control in the white house again, for the last 8 years we had with that ape ass nigga has been the worst ever! Hopefully Barack can succeed and become the Martin Luther King Jr. of this generation, to a lot of our youth, teaching change is neccessary in life.

U guys rlly dont know politics on here. This whole RECESSION is bcuz of clintons dumbass if i can remember correctly. Free trade agreement sending jobs over seas and this only keeps getting worse.
How many of u know some1 who had their job pack up and move overseas?
    yeh blame clinton
unemployment rates were higher under the clinton administration than under the current bush administration
and being in iraq isnt a republican idea totally
have u ever heard of the iraq liberation act?
well it was signed into law by bill clinton in 1998
and what r we doing right now in iraq?
    LIBERATING THEM
    U PPL R IGNORANT AS S***
get ur politics right before you try to blame everything on bush
Bush is a better president in every way than obama could ever dream of being.
raise taxes on the rich sounds nice doesnt it?
well when they start having to give more money away theyre gonna make cuts like laying people off or lowering production which in turn would lead to higher prices for the consumer
or they could just say screw these taxes im moving to china or mexico
leaving hundreds of thousands of ppl jobless
and dont even try to say the small man will take over bcuz when the big man leaves, bcuz the small man works for the big man
    PERIOD.
He supports banning of assault weapons because “those kind of weapons belong in battlefields, not on the streets”
hello…the 2nd ammendment grants us that right to bear arms.
I will not feel safe under obama. He a radical leftist bastard,a communist in disguise. he believes in redistribution of wealth and universal health care. USA is a capitalist country. There should be NO hand outs here.
if ur broke, get a job. dont like It?then move to china
ANYONE and i mean ANYONE can make it here in this country without support of the government.
Do good in school, dont have kids until ur ready, budget ur money wiseley and u will be fine.
Tired of all these lazy bastards wanting handouts for NOTHING. Why should my money that i bust my ass for at work everyday be given away to someone who cant work bcuz they want to cheat the SSI system and get a free handout.
america is the land of the hustle
you should be ashamed to ask for a handout!
WE the PEOPLE run this country, not the government
they should ask US for a handout
    vote NOBAMA
    change we CANT believe in!!

  41. Tre | 08.28.2008 @ 11:16 am

I think it helps Obama in the long run, but it also taints the election.
Many blacks (and I’m black so I know) are voting for Obama because he’s black. They know nothing of his policies, or about his background. They don’t watch his speeches or know anything about him other than the fact that he’s black.

  42. BChase90 | 08.28.2008 @ 11:32 am

this is my first year voting simply because im 18 now n wanna try to make a difference n im not gonna lie i voted for hilary but still liked both of her n obamas campaigns but now fuck black n white, even tho i think that is wat most people r voting off of, if u look at McCain’s campaign its terrible for the reasons its the same as bush’s so are we gonna let another bush in office, for the third time?, no, so we sticking with the democrat whos campaign sounds better, just like last election people didn’t wanna vote for bush so they voted for the democrat even tho his campaign wasn’t real good either…. but yes hip-hop is helping the fact that more urban youth will vote but i do believe hip hop should encourage them to do research too becuz u can’t jus go by the dude is black because as eeverybody kno blacks can be FUCKED UP TOO…n u cant expect change right away there was 8 years of damage done COME ON PEOPLE!!!!!!!

  45. jonn | 08.28.2008 @ 3:34 pm

the president is just a political figure such as a king… nothing will change. everything is run by the congress and they decide everything. everyone saying how bush is such a bad president (i agree), but why would “YA” as the people vote him in for a second 4 years?? people would say anything to become president. Look everyone agreed we should go to war after 9/11 and everyones patriotism came out! we were all for it, right? The media then started bashing (mostly democrats) on bush cause the war is “wrong”. but now look we dont hear anymore stuff on how bad the war is.. IWONDERWHY! cause maybe the democratic convention is going on. ya cant see it but the media is BIAS! either pick a side and rally on.. this is what divides our country as a whole. take a second and think…we wont see a sudden change in anything after the election. we wont be out of this war for another 10 years. we might get even into some trouble with russia cause obama wants to send troops to Georgia…lets just hope our economy. im tired of expensive a$$ $hit

  46. dat boi from il | 08.28.2008 @ 4:22 pm

i like how yall easily forget how back in 04 a bunch of black folks was were pushing to vote, not as many as today but..shit, there wasn’t a black presidential candidate then and those of who think its about race yall aint listening to the facts you listening to the shit on blog sites, Obama has great plans for the US even before being running for President he was doing big things for my state IL. Yall neeeeeeeeeed to watch the DNC (Democratic National Convention) for yall dumbfukks who don’t pay attention to shit, and then make a deceision to vote, this election i promise it will change everything that the US stands for, just ask your self you want 4 more years of what George Bush brought to the table or you want lower taxes, rebates, and to bring the troops home which will save the US 10 billion dollars a month! And finally in case ya didn’t know when congress voted John McCain voted 95% of the time agreeing with Bush.

    OBAMA ‘08=CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!

  47. bmn23 | 08.28.2008 @ 4:54 pm

  52. Uncensored | 08.28.2008 @ 10:36 pm

I’m going to be completely honest here. I’m white, and i come from a very conservative background. When I talk to members of my family who are either undecided or Republican, there is already an assumption that almost all black people will vote for Obama. Hate if you want, its the truth for those that may not have known already. I really don’t think the support of these black artists, no matter what their backgrounds, surprises anyone, so i don’t see how it could hurt. On the other hand, when an 18 year old high school student’ favorite musicians (Nas, Young Jeezy, Ludacris, Jay-Z, etc.) are all supporting the same candidate, how could that not influence them to take another look at the man?

  53. Uncensored | 08.28.2008 @ 10:39 pm

I don’t think anyone has ever had this conversation about whether the support and the redneck image of certain country singers hurts Republicans.

  54. Uncensored | 08.28.2008 @ 10:44 pm

btw i’m also from Illinois the figure was 90% that McCain voted with Bush- Obama just said it in his speech. I support Obama but in the interest of equlity Obama voted with the Democrats 96% of the time.

  55. saugacity | 08.28.2008 @ 11:38 pm

  60. Soul | 08.29.2008 @ 11:52 am

Obama is doing his thing in this grimey day and age of politics. The people are speaking and becoming a witness to change (just check the campaign finance numbers). I think the hip hop community is a catch-22 for Obama. On one hand, i’m glad to hear cats like Jeezy, Nas, and the rest of the community screaming at their core base of listeners. I think the problem comes in when the hip hop cats give love but still talk about trapping, guns and the whole 9 in the same song (sometimes the same 16 bars). The desenting arguments will always try to polarize Obama as not “one of them” and then use the negative stereo types of the hip hop community to further drive a wedge between Obama and the other communities. I understand that rappers speak about their community, but Obama is trying to be the President of the United States, that’s a lot bigger than the hood; so we have to do all we can to help and clean it up when we trying to sway older generations that dont necessarily feel hip hop. We can be a voice and keep it 100, but we have to pick and choose our moments

Is Hip Hop hurting Barack Obama? It all depends on which type of hip hop artist supports Barack Obama. With someone like Ludacris,Young Jeezy and Juelz Santana voicing their approval of Obama sure, it can hurt his campaign. Politics is perception and anyone running for public office has to be seen as a upstanding member of society. People like Murder Inc. always punctuate a sentence with ”real talk.”So let`s have some real talk. The right-wing conservatives(”the far right”)the gun toting NRA members and the white evangelicals will immediately say Obama has the support of” high-school drop-out/coke slinging foul-mouthed gangsters ‘’sure Ludacris was never a gangsta but how do you expect some of the Republican party to know the difference when the same conservatives will refer to P.Diddy as a ”gangsta rapper?”.
Barack Obama can say that he enjoys some hip hop,but he also said in Vibe that like any other musical artform just as there is hip hop that moves the young people powerfully there is a lot of hip hop that is plain junk. And it`s true.He was right some of rap is just not reality, but what it does is it creates reality and a lot of the youth start to think all they be is a entertainer or a atlete and that`s wrong. So yes,it is a catch 22,because of the subject matter of a lot of rap lyrics Obama has to keep some hip hop artists at arm`s length while openly acknowledging that some rap is good-quality music. Honestly Obama has to appeal to more than just black people,it`s good to know that he has the support of the black community and the hip hop community, but people should also know where he stands on the important issues of the day.I am a black man but I like Barack Obama because of what he represents and where he stands on the issues. But Barack Obama is running to be President Of The United States Of America and despite what Cornell West and Jeese Jackson might think he can`t only speak about issues facing African-Americans or he`ll lose this election.Black people make up 12% of the population of this country so the ”minority” label is not for nothing.Obama has to appeal to everyone from all ages, sexual orientations(I know Dipset will say ”No Homo” but Obama needs all the votes he can get),cultural and religous backgrounds because thereare still some people in this country that will not vote for a African-American to be be President, that`s just reality. This election is bigger than hip hop and if Obama is too closely associated with rap artists it could hurt his image and he could end up being pigeon-holed.Like Cory Booker part of Barack Obama`s appeal is that he defies cultural stereotypes (which is something that inspires me),the man is the antithesis of Al Sharpton and Jeese Jackson because they embody cultural stereotypes.I hope he wins and there`s nothing wrong with voting for another person because they look like you,I get that. It`s the same reason my Mom loves Serena and Venus Williams, but finding out who they are and what they stand for is equally as important in my book.
